If you have scrolled TikTok lately or walked past Lower Byrom Street, you have probably seen it. Clips of people racing electric karts through glowing digital tracks, firing virtual missiles and collecting power-ups are everywhere. Locals have started calling it Mario Kart Manchester, but despite the nickname, this is not Nintendo and it is not a game console either.

What people are actually referring to is Chaos Karts, an augmented reality go-karting attraction that opened in Manchester in September 2023. As social media hype grows faster than word-of-mouth recommendations, many Greater Manchester residents are asking a fair question. Is Mario Kart Manchester genuinely worth the money, or is it just another Instagram-friendly gimmick?

In a city already packed with immersive experiences, that question matters more than ever.

What “Mario Kart Manchester” Actually Is

Let’s clear up the confusion early. Mario Kart Manchester is not an official Nintendo experience. It is the name locals have given to Chaos Karts, developed by Little Lion Entertainment, the company behind Manchester’s long-running Crystal Maze Live Experience.

Chaos Karts is based at Arcade Arena on Lower Byrom Street, a short walk from Deansgate and next to the Science and Industry Museum. Instead of a traditional karting track, the venue uses floor- and wall-projected digital environments that interact with real electric karts.

There are no VR headsets, no helmets, and no physical track markings.

Instead, sensors in each kart respond to virtual obstacles, power-ups, and weapons projected around you. Think Mario Kart mechanics applied to a real vehicle, just without the speed.

      How the Experience Works

A standard Chaos Karts session lasts 60 to 75 minutes in total, including briefing and results screens. Actual driving time usually totals 20 to 30 minutes, spread across five to eight short races.

Each race takes place on a different themed digital circuit, such as space, underwater, or futuristic cityscapes, with power-ups including speed boosts, shields, and virtual projectiles.

Anti-collision systems automatically slow karts to prevent crashes, removing the need for safety gear. The technology is genuinely impressive and fits Manchester’s growing reputation as a gaming-forward city.

But innovation alone does not guarantee value.

Why Mario Kart Manchester Is Getting Attention Now

Manchester is not new to gaming culture. From university esports societies to Salford’s dedicated gaming campuses, the city has spent years positioning itself as a UK gaming hub.

That context explains why Mario Kart Manchester has attracted interest. It taps into Nintendo nostalgia, student and young professional group culture, and families looking for tech-driven experiences.

It also means expectations are higher here than in cities with less gaming literacy.

The Cost: What You’re Really Paying For

Standard tickets for Chaos Karts usually start at £35 per person, though weekday promotions can reduce this to around £26 to £28. Students can access further discounts during term time.

      For that price, you get:

      • Around 20 to 30 minutes of driving
      • A shared digital track with up to 10 karts
      • A short debrief and leaderboard

By comparison, traditional karting venues around Greater Manchester offer higher speeds, longer continuous racing, and larger physical tracks.

Mario Kart Manchester positions itself as a premium experience, but the numbers put it in a grey area.

How It Compares to Other Manchester Attractions

This is where value becomes subjective.

Against traditional karting, venues like TeamSport Manchester offer longer track time and faster speeds for slightly more money. Chaos Karts trades adrenaline for novelty.

Against immersive experiences, it is cheaper than the Crystal Maze but more expensive than bowling, museums, or casual gaming venues.

Against student nightlife, £26 to £35 often represents a full week’s entertainment budget, which raises the bar for what “worth it” means.

What Manchester Locals Are Actually Saying

Social media shows laughter and highlights. Review platforms show something more mixed.

Positive reviews praise the originality, the power-up mechanics, and the social competition. These tend to come from families with older children or first-time visitors.

Mixed reviews often say it was fun but too short, or that it was a good idea with expensive execution.

Negative reviews are more concerning. They cite booking errors, groups being split despite reservations, technical failures mid-race, and refund refusals.

Several reviews describe ruined birthdays or special occasions due to staff handling issues. While not universal, the consistency of these complaints suggests operational weaknesses rather than isolated bad luck.

Who Mario Kart Manchester Is Actually For

      Worth it if you are:

      • A family with children aged 11 to 15 who love gaming
      • A corporate or stag or hen group wanting something different
      • A tech-curious visitor treating it as a one-off

      Questionable value if you are:

      • A serious karting fan
      • A budget-conscious student
      • Someone expecting long, high-speed races

      The Bigger Picture for Manchester

Mario Kart Manchester reflects a wider trend in the city. High-concept, short-duration entertainment is increasingly built for social sharing rather than repeat visits.

That is not inherently bad, but in a cost-of-living-pressured city with endless alternatives, execution matters as much as innovation. Manchester audiences are savvy. They reward experiences that deliver consistent value and are quick to criticise those that do not.

Right now, Chaos Karts sits directly on that line.

Final Verdict for Greater Manchester Residents

If you catch a weekday or student discount and go in with realistic expectations, Mario Kart Manchester can be a fun and genuinely unique experience. Treat it as novelty entertainment, not serious karting, and you will likely enjoy it.

If you are maximising value per pound, prefer longer experiences, or want reliability for special occasions, Manchester offers better options.

The idea behind Chaos Karts is clever and the technology works. Until pricing, duration, and customer service fully align, Mario Kart Manchester remains a one-time curiosity rather than a must-do local staple.
