Crans Montana, Switzerland: Several people have been killed and dozens injured after an explosion and subsequent fire tore through a popular nightlife venue in Crans Montana during New Year celebrations, Swiss authorities have confirmed.

The blast occurred at approximately 1:30am local time at Le Constellation, a well-known après-ski bar in the centre of the luxury Swiss ski resort. More than 100 people were inside the venue when the explosion happened, triggering a major emergency response in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Police in the canton of Valais have confirmed fatalities, while warning that casualty figures remain provisional as rescue and identification work continues.

Explosion at Le Constellation During New Year Celebrations

The incident unfolded as revellers gathered to mark the arrival of 2026. Witnesses described a sudden detonation inside the bar, followed by a rapidly spreading fire that filled the building with smoke.

Emergency services were alerted immediately. Firefighters, paramedics, police units, and air rescue teams were deployed to the scene, with nearby streets quickly sealed off to allow evacuation and rescue operations.

Footage shared online showed flames engulfing the structure against the snow-covered resort, as emergency vehicles struggled to access the crowded town centre.

      Casualties and Police Statement

While authorities have not yet released confirmed numbers, Valais police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion said the incident had resulted in multiple deaths and serious injuries.

“There are numerous injured people and several fatalities,” he said during an early morning briefing. “The fire started around 1:30am in a bar called Le Constellation. More than a hundred people were inside the building.”

Hospitals across the Valais region activated emergency protocols to handle an influx of casualties, many of whom are being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. Medical staff, including trauma and burn specialists, were mobilised overnight.

      Emergency Measures and Timeline

Authorities imposed a temporary no-fly zone over Crans Montana to allow medical helicopters to operate safely. Ground access to the affected area remains restricted to emergency personnel.

      Key developments:

      • Explosion reported shortly after 1:30am
      • Fire crews arrive within minutes
      • Town centre cordoned off
      • Hospitals declare major incident response
      • Airspace restricted for rescue operations

A family assistance centre and emergency helpline have been established for relatives seeking information about those who may have been inside the venue.

      Investigation Into Cause

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. Police have stressed that it is too early to draw conclusions and have urged the public to avoid speculation.

Investigators are examining several potential scenarios, including technical faults and safety systems, as part of a full forensic investigation. Specialists have been dispatched to analyse the site once it is deemed safe.

Authorities have stated that there is no indication at this stage that the incident was deliberate or terror-related.

      Crans Montana: Resort in Shock

Crans Montana is one of Switzerland’s most prominent ski destinations, attracting international visitors throughout the winter season. Located in the French-speaking canton of Valais, the resort is known for its luxury hotels, nightlife, and high-profile events.

The explosion has cast a shadow over what is typically one of the busiest and most festive periods of the year. Local officials described the mood in the resort as sombre, with both residents and visitors struggling to process the scale of the tragedy.

      Ongoing Support and Next Steps

Swiss authorities say their priority remains supporting victims and their families, while ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation.

Psychological support services are being arranged for survivors and emergency responders, and accommodation is being provided for displaced guests and relatives.

Further official updates are expected later today as more information becomes available.
